Old Cape Henry Lighthouse Glass Ornament, 4 3/4", OWC# 20040
Virginia Chesapeake Bay, Old Cape Henry Lighthouse Christmas Ornament, 4 3/4", from the Merck Family's Old World Christmas Glass Ornaments collection. OWC #20040
This finely crafted ornament depicts a lighthouse built in 1792, and is called the "First" or "Old" Cape Henry lighthouse because it was retired in 1881 due to damages from a lightning strike and is now listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. The "New" and taller lighthouse was constructed just 350 feet away. The brick portion on this ornament is depicted with more of an orange coloring than in the typical daylight not only because it can cast an orange tint around sunset, but it is included in some ghostly stories for the surrounding area. This ornament is nicely detailed on all sides. It is made of blown glass, delicately hand-painted and has sparkly glittered accents.
